Friendly, tailored and engaging piano and keyboard lessons in Burton-on-Trent and South Derbyshire
Hi I’m Jo!
Welcome to my studio! I’m glad you are interested to find out more about my teaching. My studio is a friendly, inviting environment where my students feel at ease. I guide my students to become well rounded musicians and pianists. I have set out my teaching philosophy below which explains how I guide my students. |
#1 Nurturing enthusiasm and excitement to learn
To keep students enthusiastic about achieving their goals, I guide them to allow the piano to tell a story through the music, evoke emotions and imagery. In short, to make the pianist and listener feel something.
I believe it is also important to allow the student opportunity to tell me their goals, requests and if they would like to change the direction of their playing.

#2 Lifetime enjoyment of music and playing the piano
Whatever my students’ goals and however long they come to me for lessons, it is important to me that they feel able to continue to play the piano for a lifetime. From the first lessons I teach the skills needed to gain independence at the piano as soon as possible.
#3 Piano to Explore and Discover Music
My lessons are centred around music and I aim to provide the student with enjoyable musical experiences. I explore my student’s musical interests and nurture their curiosity by approaching my teaching in different ways to suit the needs of the student.
Music is multi-faceted: there are many different aspects to the music we hear and play. When teaching concepts relevant to the pieces being learnt, I believe it important to help the student to understand why it matters.

#4 Teaching Music as a Language
Music is a language and should be taught in this way. In the same way a baby learns to speak by listening to others and experimenting with sounds, I teach my students to play by rote, by ear and to improvise. While notation might come in sooner than reading does to a preschool child, I prioritise a firm appreciation of aural and expressive skills.
